Basics of Drawing Class

Join artist and educator Rachael Wilson to learn the basics of drawing, a dynamic and fundamental art medium for any creative individual. In this introductory drawing workshop, students can learn contour drawing through understanding how to observe subjects closely. Rachael will guide the class through a variety of drawing exercises and help students switch their perspective from analytical left brain to creative right brain thinking. This will be a small class with lots of opportunity for one on one instruction and questions. Bring a large sketchpad (9x12 or 11x14 prefered), graphite/drawing pencils, and a kneaded eraser. No prior experience needed.

Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of Maine and the Northeast (Presentation)

Join self-proclaimed "mushroom Maineiac" David Spahr and get the inside information on the wild mushrooms of the Northeast. Edible and medicinal mushrooms represent an opportunity for sustainably foraging and enjoying healthy, locally sourced food and present a potential for health benefits beyond good nutrition. This presentation will cover finding, collecting, identifying and preparing the safe and common edible and medicinal mushroom species of Maine, New England, and Eastern Canada. Nature enthusiasts, cooks, foragers, herbalists, and others will enjoy and benefit from David's expertise. Topics will include matching species with appropriate foods, discovering mushrooms that contain unique medicinal properties, and exploring information about dyeing fabrics and paper. David's book, Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada, will be available.

If you love cheese, sign up for this one-night hands-on NEW class! Learn to make VEGAN cheese with Diana. Enjoy a tasting session during class and then take home some of your cheeses to enjoy. Students will need to bring a one-pint containers to take cheese home. A materials fee of $8.00 is due to the instructor at class.

Farming with native plants (Presentation)

This class is about how you can grow and harvest edible native plants. David has been farming his land (and a nearby public plot) in Washington, Maine for many years, and his PowerPoint will show the native plants he farms with - such as wild high bush blueberries, American chestnut, Viburnums and dozens more - while he provides a discussion of the ecological implications.

If you’re from Maine, you’ve probably heard of needhams - a traditional sweet, covered in chocolate, with a soft coconut and POTATO center! Learn how to make this sweet Maine confection, just in time for the Easter holiday. A supply fee of $6.00 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of the class. Students should bring a flat, 1-pint container to take their treats home.
