Crochet Hats & Scarves

Learn how to crochet a hat and matching scarf set! This class is beginner friendly but knowledge of basic crochet stitches and/or beginner’s crochet is needed. Choose between two hat and two scarf patterns, including chemo hats, winter hats, infinity scarfs or a traditional scarf. Even learn how to add appliqués to make character hats! You’ll need 3-4 skeins of coordinating medium weight yarn or 2-3 skeins of cotton yarn for chemo caps, plus 3-4 hook sizes. *Refer to yarn label for hook size recommendation and then bring one or two hook sizes smaller and larger.

Decorative Skate

Enjoy this beautiful skate as a door or inside decoration for the winter or year round. We will paint this together step-by-step!! Even if you do not skate, this is a great memory of a Maine childhood. Bring your acrylic brushes to class. Other materials will be provided. Sample will be on display at the Adult Ed office for viewing before class. Material fee of $10.00 payable to instructor at first class. No experience necessary. There will not be class on 2/22/19 due to school vacation.

Folk Art Rug Hooking

Like all old fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun! Learn the sequence and procedure of rug hooking, from start to finish. Every step will be demonstrated. Once you have mastered the basics, you can easily incorporate rovings, hand spun and commercial yarns, felting techniques and embellishments, We will discuss the history and tradition of primitive rug hooking, learn about finding and preparing materials, and research sources for design inspiration. You will choose from a variety of simple folk art designed rug hooking KITS, for a small mat or chair pad, purchased directly from the instructor. Your rug hooking kit will include everything needed: hook, instructions, design suggestions, binding, burlap, hoop and a selection of one-of-a-kind heirloom and hand dyed wools ($41-$60, depending upon size). If you have a favorite pair of sharp fabric scissors, please bring these to class as well as a bag lunch if you wish.

French Braid Quilt

Create an absolutely stunning quilt for your bed. You will have the choice of making a 67" x 73" or 98" x 109" finished project. You will need to purchase the book "French Braid Quilts" by Jane Hardy Miller (ISBN 1-57120-326-5). A 10% discount will be given for the book and fabric if purchased at Mystic Maine Quilts. Getting Things Done When You are Over 60

This class will focus on giving you the confidence to put things away rather than leave stuff on every horizontal surface as a way of remembering. You will learn how to use your energy well and to adapt and compensate for short-term memory glitches. Your instructor will be sharing techniques she has developed for herself as she has progressed through the aging process.

Glass Etching

Enjoy learning a fun and fast way to create etched glass pieces. We'll provide a variety of etching patterns that will enhance and personalize your project. A goblet (that doubles as a candle holder) and an etching pattern of your choice (with all other needed supplies) is included in the cost of the class. You'll also have time to complete one or more additional projects on any clear glass items you bring to class. Consider bringing a clear mug, wine glass, clear carafe, vase, even a mirror. Supply fee for patterns and materials as well as for additional glass pieces will be available with prices that vary - starting as low as $1.00. Supply fee is payable to instructor at the class. Deadline to register is February 14th.

Iris Folding For Beginners

Iris folding is a fun and easy paper folding technique that originated in Holland. Imagine taking small pieces of decorative paper and folding them in such a way as to create a beautiful piece of paper art that you can use on a handmade greeting card, a scrapbook page or framed and hung on a wall. You will create two beautiful iris folded pieces with a spring theme that you'll be proud to keep or give to someone special. Please bring small scissors and scotch tape. A material fee of $7.00 is due to the instructor at the class. There are only 10 seats available in this class, so sign up early!
